Historic Gold Coins
Gold coins that circulated as money: Sovereigns from the reigns of Victoria, Edward VII and George V, and American Double Eagles struck before Roosevelt withdrew gold coin from circulation in 1933.
These are offered as historical issues, not as individually catalogued specimens. Most listings cover a range of dates within a reign or a type rather than one particular coin, so the date, mint and mintmark you receive will vary and cannot be chosen. Condition varies as well — coins that circulated carry wear, and some have been cleaned at some point in their lives.
Age on its own does not make a coin scarce. Most surviving Sovereigns of these reigns are common, and they are priced accordingly. If the date, mintmark or condition of a particular coin matters to you, ask before ordering and we will tell you what is actually on the shelf.
Modern restrikes of historical designs are not listed here, even when they carry an earlier date. The Austrian four ducat is dated 1915 whenever it was struck, so it sits under World Gold Coins instead.
