Twenty dollars in gold, and for most of the nineteenth century the largest coin in American circulation. The Liberty Head — also called the Coronet Head — was designed by James B. Longacre and struck from 1850 until 1907, when Saint-Gaudens' design replaced it. Nearly an ounce of fine gold in a coin that actually circulated, and one that carried a great deal of America's monetary gold before 1933.
